When I was in primary school, I loved to make my own books. I wasn’t very good at drawing so I would often cut out pictures from old birthday cards to use as the illustrations. Unfortunately, this meant that my stories were written to suit the pretty pictures I had chosen, and the stories themselves didn’t always make much sense. I like to think that my writing has improved since then but, sadly, my illustrative talents remain about the same.

This is a page from a book I wrote when I was young.
By the time I finished high school, I was fascinated with science and went to university to become a medical laboratory scientist. I worked in laboratories for several years before deciding to travel overseas. My science degree wasn’t recognised outside Australia so I tried all sorts of interesting jobs while I was living abroad. I’ve worked as an English teacher, a waitress (waitressing in a coffee shop in Japan is very tricky when you can’t read the menu), a tour guide, a shop assistant, and a fundraiser. Although I always enjoyed trying new things and meeting new people, none of these became my ‘dream job’.
It wasn’t until I moved back to Australia and started writing stories for my own children that I realised that working with words was what I really wanted to do. I currently live in Brisbane with my husband, sons, a fluffy cat and lots of dictionaries.
